CHAPTER 23 THOUGHT 1

The internet is a "commons" as the author of our book would say. This means everyone can access it and it is not controlled in a sence. This lead to much innovation and to make the interent what it is today. With all good things there are bad.  Do you feel the internet should be controlled more? If so, by who?

  1. I do not feel the internet should be controlled more, I feel that it should only be monitored for criminal activity. I do not know how they would figure out who was doing what unless they monitored everybody but i feel their should be some sort of new advanced technology that would notify the government if somebody was doing illegal activity or looking up things they shouldn't be looking up. But I do not feel it should be over protected because it violates peoples privacy.

  2. I think that if you get into control over the internet we open up pandora's box. Control is a word the government likes to use. There are regulations that should be used but total control is not really the way to go. If you cross the line of freedom of speech then we take away many other rights.

  3. I don't really think the internet should be controlled more. I think that the beauty of the internet is that is has completely changed the way that we obtain our information and this is an awesome thing. If people are abusing the internet or using it for unlawful things the government already tracks and monitors them. To me this is plenty.

  4. No. The WWW is just that - the World Wide Web - anybody should be able to make available (Within law that may restrict certain types of materials such as child pornography.)anything they wish others to see. It should be up to the end user to decide whether to look at something or not. If you don't like it, you don't have to look at it.

  5. I don't believe it should be controlled unless there is criminal activity which was mentioned earlier. I do believe that we have some issues with young children and I feel that it is up to the parents to monitor what is going on in their child's life.

  6. I do not think the internet should be controlled. we do not live in a communist china where we are told what to believe. its public information and it should stay that way.

  7. The basic notion of control could be translated as a limitation of ability. If the full abilities of the internet were only allowed to be accessed by a select few, they would prosper greatly at a loss to everyone else. Therefore, I think the internet should continue to be a free commons. The idea that everything needs to be owned and controlled by the economic or social elite only leads to overall imbalances of equality and prosperity.

  8. I don't think the internet should be controlled, mainly because that would be a logistical nightmare, the internet is way too vast to be controlled thoroughly. The only regulation I could see as necessary would be if it is illegal offline like someone mentioned child porn or something like fraud that should be regulated because it is already illegal.

  9. No. The FCC would love to. But that just leads to censorship, which is something this country has traditionally prided itself on not having. People can choose what they look at online. If it is concern for children, then parents can put controls on the computer. Being an adult, I do not want the information available to me limited because someone in the government finds it inappropriate or not beneficial to their own agenda.

  10. The internet should not be controlled beyond what our natural laws demand. Stealing, Slave trade, prostitution, and many other illegal activities should be looked out for, but when it comes to regulating content, laissez faire.

  11. The internet should not be controlled more by anyone. The freedom of expression has led to its inevitable growth.

  12. No, I don't really feel that the internet should be controlled at all. This is American and our global environment is a wonderful entity. I do feel that people should be more careful with it;s use.

  13. I don't think it should be controlled beyond what it currently is. I think there are good controls to remove child pornography and things like that. Beyond that, I can't imagine more control benefiting anyone.

  14. I do not feel that the internet should be controlled more. The way it is now seems as if it is working good enough. Any more limitations would change the way that people would be able to search the web to find information.

  15. I do not feel that the internet should be controlled more. With parental controls there is already ways to block the internet from kids or something you do not want to see. In many high schools and middle schools, they will block a majority of the websites which disables the ability for a student to access any part of the internet.

  16. I do think that the internet’s information should be controlled in a better way. I have stated that comment on another one of the student’s blog pages. I like the ideal of someone reviewing subject matter first before it is posted. It could be a sign off sheet, something to describe the type of information. One of the requirements could be that you have to state if the data is factual or someone’s opinion. I would also think the web site owner would want to know what is getting posted before having it available for the whole world to see.
